Why Green and Good?
Each one of us wishes to leave behind a world that is better than what we were born with. It was this wish that set us thinking about what we could do to make this happen.
When we looked around we noticed that our world is constantly being acted upon by people in two simple ways. Either we are making it better or we are making it worse. It is very much like a weighing scale with “Good” on one side and “Bad” on the other. Actions that add to the "Good" side make it a “better” world while actions that add to the "Bad" side make it a “worse” world.
While many of our actions lead to reckless depletion of resources, global warming, social intolerance, skewed distribution of economic wealth, increased crime etc thereby making the bad side dominant, there are many other actions like saying “No” to plastics, using recycled paper, educating children who cannot afford a school, taking care of people who need help in our society make the “Good” side dominant.
We saw that there are many NGOs, businesses and individuals that have completely devoted themselves to the task of doing things that add to the "Good" side. They are doing things that often have little direct benefit for them. Many have quit extremely well paying jobs and stable careers to do so. Wonder why??? We guess it's because they know that a better world is possible and that they can make it happen!!
Unfortunately most of them are extremely resource starved and work on really tight budgets. Imagine for a second, that if they had the money they needed! Wouldn’t our world be a better place much sooner? Then, why is it that if they're doing such good work that they don’t have enough money? That’s because their immediate beneficiaries cannot pay them for their services. Either they don’t have the money or they are incapable of paying it. Children from economically challenged households, who are educated by charities, are unable to pay the true value of education received by them. Stray and abandoned animals cannot pay for the services of an animal shelter.
So who should pay? You and I. Why? Because we benefit from these services too! We have a happier and healthier society and life because of them. It is only correct that we pay for our share of the benefits so that these organizations can continue and grow the great work that they've been doing for all of us.
But how do we pay it? There are many ways to do that. You can donate to some of them (the NGOs) - that’s easy and you also get a tax rebate on the donation. You can donate to them via cash, cheque, credit card, at their office, through mail, or even online. You can also visit the sites of the NGOs we're working with and learn more about how to donate to them. But there's another way too…why not buy the products that they are selling? Let’s see what that does.
It’s a win-win solution for everyone!!
- You provide money in return for a tangible product which you would have bought any way. They get the much needed cash for their operations and you get a product that you needed
- You also provide liquidity for the provisioning of services which will in turn make it a better place for you, your loved ones, and the rest of us! Isn't that nice??
- You encourage the development of a market for such products, which makes their production economically viable. So effectively you encourage people to manufacture products made from recycled paper, recycled plastic, take up organic farming, you provide economic incentive for artisans to continue making traditional handicrafts and pass on their tradition, knowledge, methods and culture to the next generation, you help sustain rural livelihoods that prevents people from migrating to cities in desperation.
- You create meaningful employment opportunities and a life of dignity for people with physical challenges.
- And guess what? The biggest benefit you reap is when you incorporate these products into your regular lifestyle. You also choose a healthier, less toxic lifestyle for your self and your family as most of these products are made in an eco-friendly way and with eco-friendly or natural material
It’s a win-win solution for everyone. It’s amazing that so much can happen thanks to you purchasing a socially and environmentally responsible product!
Well this was what motivated us to open this store!
