Zeme Organics Pvt. Ltd was established in December 2007 and is based in Bangalore, India and sells environmental friendly organic cotton clothes under the brand name ‘Zeme’ in India and other countries.
Zeme or Žemė (pronounced as Zhe meh) means ‘goddess of the earth’ or ‘earth mother’ in Latvian and Lithuanian mythology. Accordingly, everything in nature that is born, grows and dies belongs to this earth mother, who protects and nourishes the planet.
Zeme Organics’ mission is “Offering and encouraging people to wear organic clothes is our way of contributing to help reduce ground water pollution and green house effect so that mother earth can breathe easily”.

What is Organic?
Organic is a method of production and not characteristics of the product.
Organic cotton is cotton grown using organic farming method & regulations i.e. cultivation of plants without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. By not using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, organic agriculture reduces the pollution of ground water, prevents soil erosion and promotes biodiversity. It also helps to minimize the greenhouse effect and global warming through its ability to trap carbon in the soil
While manufacturing yarn, fabric and printing of fabric only Ezo free, biodegradable dyes /colours are used.
Zeme and its supply chain follow GOTS standards i.e. Global Organic Textile Standard. The standard is valid for fibre products, yarns, fabrics and clothes and covers the production, processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, exportation, importation and distribution of all natural fibre products.
Of all organic fibres, organic cotton is one of the most popular.

Many People assume Natural cotton is Organic cotton. But Natural cotton is not Organic cotton. When you see cotton products labelled as "natural", you are getting conventional cotton grown with large inputs of chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides to control weed growth. The only difference between natural and conventional cotton is in the processing i.e. natural product is not supposed to be treated with formaldehyde or chlorine bleach. There are no inspection guidelines to ensure processing of green/ natural cotton is chemical-free.
By contrast Organic Cotton comes with certification and by being grown on land that is chemical free for at least three years, and meet stringent requirements for operations prohibiting use of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides; and adhere to organic standards that nurture the soil and animals.
